When you book international travel — hotels, activities, or tours priced in a foreign currency — your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.
What to expect
Foreign transaction fees are typically 1–3 percent of the transaction amount. This fee is applied by your bank or card issuer; it does not come from Leisure Loyalty or our suppliers.
Depending on your bank, the fee may appear as a separate line item on your statement or be rolled into the converted amount. The presentation varies.
How to avoid the fee
Use a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees. Many travel-focused cards offer this benefit. Check your card's terms before booking international travel to know what to expect.
American Express limitation
AMEX cards on this platform are processed in USD only. If you are booking something priced in a foreign currency, use a Visa or Mastercard instead — an AMEX card cannot be used for non-USD bookings.
If you see an unexpected charge
Compare the transaction amount on your statement to your booking confirmation total, converted at the current exchange rate. A small percentage above the converted rate is almost always a foreign transaction fee applied by your bank. If the discrepancy is significantly larger than 1–3 percent, that warrants a call to your bank to investigate.
Important note: The Travel Desk is not able to reverse or reimburse foreign transaction fees — these are charges your bank applies independently of our platform.
